The Art Institute of Chicago

Interaction with History, Vision to the Future

wHY has been responsible for relocating and installing many of the permanent galleries at the Art Institute of Chicago. The identity of the Institution and its cherished history are among the many ingredients that have directed the design of these galleries.  wHY worked closely with museum administration, trustees, and others to understand the context of the new galleries and develop a vision for the museum as a whole as it moves into the future.

wHY’s design conceives each gallery as a piece of a larger whole.  By thoughtfully inserting new spaces and renovating others throughout the historic building, a synergy and cohesive experience revitalizes existing spaces and enhances visitors’ experience.
