Kulapat Yantrasast Named Artistic Director of the 2027 Bukhara Biennial

Kulapat Yantrasast has been named Artistic Director of the 2027 Bukhara Biennial in Uzbekistan — the second edition of the exhibition that drew an estimated 1.8 million visitors to the ancient Silk Road city in its debut year.

Conceived and commissioned by Gayane Umerova and the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, the next Biennial runs September 3–November 21, 2027. Yantrasast succeeds inaugural Artistic Director Diana Campbell.

Building on the Biennial’s model of producing new work through collaborations between international artists and Uzbek artisans, Yantrasast plans to widen the conversation to include ecologists, scientists, anthropologists, and community groups — taking up questions of water, air, and biodiversity while opening additional sites across Bukhara, from newly restored historic buildings to public squares.

“I want the art and the festival to have something to do with the people,” Yantrasast told ARTnews.
