WHY Architecture’s design approach for Contempo in Manila integrates nature, architecture, and art under one expansive roof – creating a seamless fusion of indoor and outdoor experiences. Developed in collaboration with WILDING X, the museum redefines the boundaries between the landscape and the built environment by inviting nature to flow into and around the structure. This approach transforms the outdoor spaces around the museum into versatile, open-air living rooms that encourage a wide variety of activities and events, adding a dynamic social dimension to the museum’s function. The iconic building prioritizes sustainability and future-forward design solutions that are faithful to the city’s commitment to being environmentally conscious in light of pressing climate challenges.
Working closely with museum planning and management experts, WHY has designed a world-class environment for contemporary art that meets and exceeds international standards. The museum’s galleries are robust and adaptable, equipped with state-of-the-art systems that support a wide array of contemporary art forms, from large-scale installations to digital media displays. Flexible spaces between the galleries create an adaptable framework, enabling Contempo to host diverse events and programs that foster interaction and community engagement.
The design also effectively doubles the usable floor area by utilizing covered outdoor spaces, protecting visitors and artworks from Manila’s tropical monsoon climate. Large overhangs and canopies extend beyond the building, providing shaded and sheltered spaces that promote sustainability by minimizing heat gain and reducing the need for air conditioning. This approach not only aligns with the client’s ambitious environmental goals but also creates an inviting environment that celebrates the relationship between nature and art. Through its thoughtful integration of landscape, architecture, and functionality, Contempo establishes itself as a contemporary cultural landmark for Manila and the wider art community.
