ilmi Science Discovery & Innovation Center

DESIGN THE LIFE

The ILMI Science Discovery & Innovation Center is a landmark project in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, dedicated to the subjects of science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and math. The massing, an iridescent geodesic globe perched on top of a fully landscaped plinth, was inspired by the renewable energy of the sun in a desert environment and the local lilac-colored Echinops flowering plant, also known as the globe thistle. The museum is a symbol for the future of Saudia Arabia and it’s invested interest in innovation, sustainability, local craft, and human-centered design.

EXPERIENCING SUSTAINABILITY

The Globe facade acts as a large-scale mashribaya screen where materials and shading fins are intelligently distributed based on solar exposure and internal program. A dynamic mix of transparency, color, and reflectivity allow for thermal comfort while dissolving the distinction between exhibition and garden spaces within. Programmable facade lighting enhances this effect at night and offers the ability to utilize the facade itself as an educational and interactive piece of art.

UNPRECEDENTED ACCESSIBILITY

Accessibility is of primary importance for the end user at ILMI. Interior and exterior circulation provide a continuous shared experience between different modes of access. Sensory zoning is clearly delineated through visual, auditory, and haptic cues to enrich experiences for all. Through sensitive design, the visitor experience of navigating the globe structure catalyzes uniquely engaged educational journeys while both the indoor and outdoor gardens inspire by nurturing native growth - echoing the key teaching points for the youth of Saudi Arabia.

NATIVE GROWTH

Designed by WILDING X, the landscape at ILMI Science Discovery & Center is a playful environment that undulates in response to the local context and forms an important part of the newly developed urban fabric and Vision 2030 goals. Through a dedication to using native plants, the ILMI landscape demonstrates the splendor and diversity of vegetation in Saudi Arabia. Visitors will learn from the land as they begin to understand the benefits of using native plants—from increased resilience, to habitat creation, to food production.
